Doshu's Welcoming Remarks:
As the primary organizer of this event, I would like to say a few words. I am delighted that this year's Demonstration has turned out to be such a successful event. This is the 40th occasion of this event, which makes this year special, I believe. The first Demonstration was held in 1960,at Yamano Hall in Yoyogi. At that time, Aikido was not very widely known. From what I understand, the number of participants of that first event totaled about 150 people. This year's Demonstration is the 25th one to be held at the Nippon Budokan, and 6,500 people will participate.
That this event can have grown to such great proportions is the result of the endeavors of many people; those who train diligently in Aikido, and those who have come to have a deep understanding of Aikido. Another result of this growth is the spread of Aikido to other countries throughout the world, presently numbering approximately 80.
From this time on, for the further development of Aikido, let us continue to adhere to the ideals and spirit of the Founder, Ueshiba Morihei, and to be perservering in our diligence in both thought and action.
Finally, I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the sponsors of this event, especially the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
